The PQI Solution™, which has been refined
by over forty years of harmonic mitigating experience, includes:
-
A Statement of Design Objectives,
-
A comprehensive System Study,
-
A detailed Mitigation Proposal and
-
A system Performance Guarantee.
The PQI Solution™ is in addition to any
other design objectives and applicable code requirements.
To influence the design of a new electrical
distribution system, our Engineering Support Department often asks
designers for their ‘preliminary’ drawings. Experience has taught us
that it is unrealistic to expect that an engineer will have the
resources to make significant changes to a system design that has
progressed much beyond the preliminary stage, even when the benefits
are overwhelming.
Similarly, the mitigation of load-generated
harmonics in an existing system may require a review of ‘as-built’
drawings. The replacement of healthy transformers, whether
conventional or K-Rated, may not be required with the application of
zero-sequence harmonic filters. Although this solution would
not result in an optimized system design, the reduction of
zero-sequence harmonic currents, alone, may result in an
acceptable ‘power quality’ outcome.
These services are normally offered to facility
owners or their consulting engineers on a free-of-charge basis.
DESIGN OBJECTIVES
To resolve all of the issues that normally result
from a non-mitigating ‘conventional design’, the Design Objectives
must include:
-
Harmonic Current Control,
-
Voltage Distortion Reduction (<5% THDV),
-
Neutral – Ground Voltage (<4V)
-
∆Neutral
– Ground Voltage Reduction (<2V),
-
Capital Cost Reduction and
-
Operating Cost Reduction.
These objectives are detailed in a ‘Harmonic
Mitigation Specification’, which is available from
PQI for inclusion
in the ‘General Requirements’ of an engineer’s electrical
specification.

SYSTEM
STUDY
A system Study is completed for the existing or proposed
‘conventional design’ and all ‘harmonic mitigating design’
alternatives. The study, which is based on information
provided by the engineer, includes a detailed analysis of
the system’s performance, power quality and costs. |
|
|
MITIGATION
PROPOSAL
The Mitigation Proposal includes a detailed summary of PQI
product application sites, ratings, models and budgetary
estimates. A proposal may also include the application
logic, product specifications, connection diagrams,
engineering notes and recommendations, regarding system
revisions, operation and loading. |

PERFORMANCE
GUARANTEE
A fully implemented PQI solution includes a Performance
Guarantee. This guarantee ensures that all system
performance, power quality and cost issues, which are
detailed in The Harmonic Problem, will be resolved.
PQI is the only manufacturer that can
provide this Performance Guarantee, in every
situation, with the system loaded to maximum allowable NEC
levels. This claim is based on PQI’s ability to control
critical harmonic currents at their source. The guarantee
often requires the application of PQI’s patented and patent
pending products, and system configuration alternatives. |
